MAHA GANAPATHIM MANASA SMARAMI -MY KERALA MURAL

Here is my favorite Kerala Mural

I present this mural

along with Sri Muthuswami Dikshitar's

Sanskrit verse on the Lord...

along with it's meaning in English....

mahaa kaavya naaTakaadi priyam

Core meaning:

Mahaganapathy! My namaskarams to you. I meditate on You, the Great God Ganapathy. You are the one who is worshipped by great sages such as Vashishta and Vamadeva. You are the son of the Great Lord Shiva. You are always adored by 'Guruguha', Lord Skanda. You have a beauty and shine with the brilliance of a thousand 'manmadhas' -  Cuipds. You are the embodment of peace and tranquility. You love great poetry and drama. You have as the vehicle, as a mount,  a small mouse. You love the modhakas, a variety of sweet made of rice and coconut.  I bow to thee. My lord, Maha Ganapathy.

The stories here :

Mahadevasutham : He is the son of the Great Lord Shiva. How Ganesha was born as the son of Shiva is an interesting story in itself. For the complete story, check out : The Birth of Ganesha : Story

Mahakavya Natakathipriyam: Lord Ganesha is the one who wrote Mahabharatha. This is an interesting story. Vyasa, who wrote Mahabharatha, needed someone who could write as fast as he could recite the slokas of Mahabharatha. He chose Ganapathy as the right person who could do it. Lord Ganesha agreed with one single condition : Vyasa should tell it as fast as he could write it! Vyasa also agreed and put a condition back : Ganesha should write the slokas only after understanding the meaning of the sloka. Ganesha agreed. Vyasa told it real fast and in between slokas, describing the slokas, he would put in one sloka which could have very subtle meaning. This, Ganesha had to decipher and it took slightly more time. This gave Vyasa a little more time to compose the next set of verses and be ready to dictate. Refer this for a little More on Vyasa

Vyasa is revered for his contributions. He is seen as Lord Vishnu himself. The Vishnu sahasranamam says :

"Vyasaya Vishnu Roopaya,
  Vyasa Roopaya Vishnave"

It is no wonder that for Lord Ganesha accepted such a person's request.

Lord Ganapathy broke one of his tusks to be used as the pen. Elephants love their tusks. The tusk is the pride of any elephant. And yet, Lord Ganesha sacrificed it to be used as the pen to write the great epic. That shows how much love he had for the poetry and dramas. He used the great Mountain of Meru (Himachala) itself as the writing pad.

He uses Mooshika - the mouse as his vehicle. The mouse stands for ignorance and greed. It tries to nibble away at almost everything that it sees. When you pray MahaGanapathy, you will become the master of ignorance and greed as much as Lord Ganesha himself is.

PILLAYAARPATTI PILLAYAAR-MY TANJORE PAINTING

Here is my painting of Lord Karpagavinayaka  of Pillayaarpatti...

He is fondly known as Pillayaarpatti pillayar.

This is an offbeat  and contemporary painting in Tanjore style....

Pillaiyarpatti is located near Thiruppathur, Sivagangai District of Tamil Nadu. It is situated between Kundrakkudi and Tiruppatthur. Pilliyarpatti is 12 Kilometers away from Thiruppatthur and 3 kilometers from Kundrakkudi. Pillaiyarpatti Karpaga Vinayagar is carved out in a cave of Pillaiyarpatti Hillocks. Lord Vinayagar is carved out from the rock of the cave. Lord Thiruveesar is also carved in the rock of this cave. The temple was built under patronisation of Pandyas. The age of the cave temple is 2500 years or more. There are 14 stone Sculptures in the cave ( dated from 500 BC to 1284 AD ). These stone Sculptures state the ancient names of Pillaiyarpatti such as Ekkattoor, Thiruveenkaikkudi, Maruthangudi, and Rajanarayanapuram.
Pillaiyarpatti temple is a rock-cut temple located in Thiruppatthur, Sivagangai District. It was built after viewing a hillock by the early Pandiya kings. The image of Pillaiyarpatti Pillaiyar and that of a Siva Lingam were carved out of a stone by a sculptor named Ekkattur Koon Peruparanan who put his signature on a stone inscription, in Tamil Language used between the 2nd and 5th century AD, found even today in the sanctum. It can be concluded that the icon of Pillaiyarpatti Pillaiyar must have been carved around 4th century AD.
Pillaiyar (Vinayagar), the God of Victory is the main deity here in the name, Pillaiyarpatti Pillaiyar.
This temple is the only one in Tamil Nadu which contains a 6 feet rock-cut Pillaiyar idol. The Thumbikai of Lord Pillaiyar is curled towards his right side and so the God is also known as Valampuri Pillaiyar. The chettiyar (nagarathar) community has kept the temple clean. Chettiars are the only community whose subcastes are divided based on Sivan Temples. e.g. subcastes like Pillayarpatti, Elayatrankudi and etc.

  • Vinayagar’s trunk is curved at the right side (Valampuri Vinayagar) which is also a unique feature. Lord Karpaga Vinayagar is seated facing northern side.
  • There are deities in this temple such as goddess Karthiyayini (who arranges marriages), Nagalingam (who gifts offspring), Pasupatheeswarar (who showers all wealth).
  • Vinayagar Chathurthi is this temple's most important festival. It is 10 days long. Kappaukkattutual and hoisting temple flag begin before 9 days. On the 9th day car festival and much celebrated decoration of sandal covering ( Santha-na-kkappu) to Pillaiyar takes place.
  • Devotees who observe Chathurthi Fast for a year come to Pillaiyarpatti on Avani Sukkilaptcha Chathurthi day (Festival) and fulfills it. They observe fast on Chathurthi day in front of vinayagar sannaidhi and take part in “ KumbaJebam” and receive holy water.
There is a one Pilliyar painting, in which Pillayar's eyes will look at us wherever we stand.

GANESHA ON A MAT

Somethings stand the test of time....

This Ganesha painted on a mat

is one such things...

Would you believe it,if I tell you

He is nearly forty years old !

Yes ! This  painting was done by me

when I was still in school!

 in the early seventies...

It had decorated many walls

He moved houses along with me many a times...

It has been quite some years since

He has been neatly rolled up and sent to the loft...

and in spite of decluttering my house periodically

I never had the heart to see Him off....

Maybe,because  I felt

it was wit Him ,I made my foray into creativity

in which He helps me till date...

I know ,this is just a traced outline on a mat

dutifully filled with the various color paints

available in my box...But still,

He is someone Special to me!

GANESHA WITH ALUMINIUM FOIL-ART FROM WASTE

One reason why Lord Ganesha is an artist's favorite

is because he lends himself to any art form

and He is crafted with almost any material

available under the sun...

This Ganesha is made with

Aluminium foil which is used to wrap up

foodstuff and the like!

The pieces of Ganesha's form

is cut out in cardboard and wrapped up

with crushed aluminium foil

and then they are given antique staining

with anti rust paints and let to dry for a day.

Then the pieces are stuck on

a cloth mounted board ...

Voila,a highly attractive and creative

wall hanging is all yours...

and it is ridiculously  inexpensive too!

BALA GANAPATHY or AALILAI GANESHA -A TANJORE PAINTING

Here is a different Ganesha...

Little Ganesha or Bala Ganapathi

reclining on a peepul leaf (Aalilai)-

This  pose similar to that of Aalilai Krishna-

a cherubic baby- Balakrishna,

wearing jewels and a lotus bud garland,

lying on a cushioned, jewel encrusted Peepul leaf

with a foot held in his palms near his mouth...

a typical pose of a happy baby...

Aalilai Krishna is a perennial favorite

 in Tanjore style paintings...

ANOTHER GANESHA ON A MIRROR

I wish to share a simple

glass painting  done on a mirror...

A Ganesha on any medium

catches my fancy and

this medium is no exception...

Since I did not want any bare patches

of the mirror to be exposed,

I covered the background areas

with silver glitter and

enhanced parts of the main design

with gold colored glitters...

THREE GANESHAS - TILE PAINTINGS...

Just three odd leftover tiles and

some bits of maroon furnishing cloth

made me put on my thinking cap!

The result was

these three Ganeshas made

with out liners and glass colors...

and then I dried these tiles for a day

and stuck the maroon cloth on suitable boards

and then , mounted the tiles on them...

and once they were framed

I grouped the three Ganeshas

and decorated my wall with them...

Ganesha on a muram (winnow)

Here is another old sentimental treasure...

this Ganesha on a Muram (winnow)...

This is a small muram ,which I picked up from a Craft fair...

I stuck a plaster of Paris Ganesha in the center of the winnow

and gave it an antique finish and finally embellished it with

stones and chamkis...stuck a small ring on the back of the muram

with the help of which I could hand it on my wall....

This piece  is older than a decade...and I should say

except for a few fallen stones ,no other damage is there for

this piece in spite of its fragility and age...

A winnow or muram -is a typical eco friendly kitchen article found

in all traditional Indian kitchens and farms. It is used to seperate

the chaff /unwanted particles  from the grain with the help

of the wind... The light dust particles get blown off and the heavy

grains settle down...

               File:Vannage du riz, Uttarakhand, India.jpg

See how a Muram is used in the paddy fields

to seperate the chaff from the grain...

All you need is a little creative thinking

to change a dowdy article into a decorative piece...

GANAPATHI - MY TANJORE PAINTING

"VAKRA THUNDA MAHAA KAYA

SOORYA KODI SAMAPRABAA...

NIRVIGNAM GURAVE DEVA

SARVA KAARYESHU SARVATHAA...."

Here is another traditional

Tanjore Painting of mine ...

It portrays Ganapathi or Ganesha

seated in his gem encrusted golden throne...

Watch his trunk turned to the right...

He is called the Valampuri Vinayaka...

and this is considered a lucky aspect.

You will be able to note the heavy

NILAMAALAI-(heavy garland)

a signature aspect in tanjore paintings...

So are the lotus bud garland and the bolster

and the cushioned seat...

Watch the Ankusha and Paasa in two of his hands

while the other two hands hold

a broken tusk and a modakam or kozhukkatai

(his favorite sweet offering) respectively...

And spread out before him is a plate full

of sweet modakams ...

and watch his little mascot- Mooshika

who is also is honoured vehicle ,

nibble a tiny modakam...

HAND MADE PHOTO FRAME

HERE IS A SIMPLE PHOTO FRAME

WHICH IS MADE UP OF ORDINARY

CARDBOARD AND HANDMADE PAPER

SINCE IT LOOKED TOO PLAIN ,

I DECIDED TO BRIGHTEN UP ...

I JUST NOZZLED OUT SOME

3-D  GOLD LINER AND SILVER GLITTERS

AND STUCK A LITTLE GANESHA...

( I HAD PULLED IT OUT OF AN

OLD WEDDING INVITATION)

I GAVE IT TO MY MOTHER

WHO PROMPTLY SLIPPED A PICTURE

OF SHRI  KANCHI PARAMACHARYA

INTO THIS FRAME AND GAVE THE FRAME

AN UNEXPECTED HONOR AND RESPECTABILITY...

ANOTHER GANESHA- A TANJORE PAINTING

HERE IS ANOTHER TANJORE PAINTING

FROM MY GANESHA COLLECTION...

THIS IS A TRADITIONAL AND SIMPLE  ONE

WHERE YOU FIND GANESHA

WITH SEATED ON A CUSHIONED ,BEJEWELLED PEDESTAL...

AND A GEM ENCRUSTED MANTAP AND ARCH HEADED WITH A YAALI...

HE IS SITTING WITH A LEG FOLDED ...

AND A BROKEN TUSK,A MODHAKAM (KOZHUKKATTAI),AND LOTUSES

RESPECTIVELY IN HIS FOUR HANDS...

LITTLE MOOSHIK IS AT HIS FEET

NIBBLING AWAY A TINY MODHAK...

SRI MAHA GANAPATHI -A METAL EMBOSSING

"MOOSHIKA VAAHANA MODHAKA HASTHA

SAAMARA KARNA VILAMBIDHA SUTRA

VAAMANA ROOPA MAHESHWARA PUTRA

VIGNA VINAYAKA PAADHA NAMASTE..."

Here is my metal embossing

of SRI MAHA GANAPATHI

Done on a copper sheet...

Copper gives a warm glow

which adds to the richness of the work...

When we stain the copper embossing

with antirustt paint,

it adds to the burnished effect

and unlike aluminium embossing,

which glows in copper, bronze and silver shades...

a copper embossing is always subtle, muted and glows warmly...

and that ultimately adds to the richness of the work......
